Dr. Ayşe Yaşar Ümütlü is an academic and author carrying out work in the philosophy of law, philosophy of justice, public law, international law, human rights and the relationship between law and technology.
Combining her undergraduate degrees in public administration and international relations with her master's studies in the philosophy of justice and public law, and her doctorate in the philosophy of law, Ümütlü focuses her research on the relationship between law, freedom, justice, authority, the state and society.
At Necmettin Erbakan University, Institute of Social Sciences, she completed a master's degree in the Philosophy of Justice with her thesis “A Comparison of Justice in the Context of Freedom in John Stuart Mill and Herbert Spencer,” as well as a master's degree in Public Law. At Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, Institute of Social Sciences, she completed her doctorate in the Philosophy of Law with her dissertation “Law and Authority in Ibn Khaldun and Herbert Spencer.”
Between 2014 and 2024 she served as a Lecturer (Dr.) at the Necmettin Erbakan University Vocational School of Justice, teaching philosophy of law, sociology of law, justice psychology, prison administration and execution law, human rights and public freedoms, justice professional ethics, and international law case analyses.
Dr. Ayşe Yaşar Ümütlü's academic approach is based on establishing a relationship between the classical traditions of thought and today's problems of law, justice and human rights. Ranging from Ibn Khaldun's theory of society and state to Kant's idea of perpetual peace, and from Herbert Spencer's critiques of political institutions to debates on artificial intelligence law, cyber law and algorithmic justice, her research brings together the philosophy of law and the philosophy of justice with international law, human rights and the ethical questions of the digital age.
Relating the historical accumulation of legal philosophy to contemporary global problems through her books, academic articles, conference papers and thought pieces, Ümütlü continues her interdisciplinary academic work, with a particular focus on law and technology, artificial intelligence law and algorithmic justice.
Current work
Her current research develops along the axis of the philosophy of law, philosophy of justice, public law, international law and human rights, around the themes of artificial intelligence law, digital law, cyber law, algorithmic justice, law and technology, and legal ethics.
